A workbench covered in tools and supplies

The rules went on the wall the week we opened.

I spent nine years at a big heating company watching furnaces get sold by the sticker on the old one. Bigger always sold easier. Half those houses ended up with a furnace that ran in short bursts, wore itself out and never kept the back bedroom warm.

When I opened Degree Day in 2015, I painted the rules I wanted to work by on a sheet of yellow plywood and screwed it to the back wall of the shop. Everyone who works here reads it on their first day. We still measure every room before we quote, and we still tell you when it's only the filter.

We're four people now, out of a shop on Archibald Street, working across Winnipeg and out to Oakbank, Lorette and Headingley.

Marta Hryniuk, owner

  1. 2015Opened on Archibald. Painted the first three rules on the wall.
  2. 2017Added "We won't charge you to tell you it's the filter" after Paulette started the phone checks.
  3. 2020Started installing cold-climate heat pumps, and added the heat pump rule.
  4. 2024Dropped our maintenance plan for a single fall check. The plan rule went up.
